Sustainer is a collaborative project done by myself and Andreas Eiken. We worked on the project throughout the entirety of our fourth year in the Design Program at Emily Carr University.

Together we developed Sustainer, a reusable food container paired with a mobile app that makes to-go meals sustainable.

We are attempting to use a multidisciplinary design approach to tackle the problem of excess waste going to landfills caused by to-go food containers.

We addressed this problem by putting the onus on the user and providing them with a product in which they could eat meals on-the-go in a sustainable manner.

This led us to ask ourselves, why can’t a reusable food container be a part of the things we carry every day like our keys, a water bottle, or our phones?

In asking ourselves this question we came across three major barriers:

 they leak

they leak

 they're awkward

they're awkward

people don't remember to bring them

people don't remember to bring them

Our concept is a collapsible, leak proof container paired with a reminder-based mobile app to encourage sustainable eating.

We solved issue of forgetfulness by pairing the food container with a reminder-based mobile application. The app works by prompting the user when he/she enters a particular restaurant.

The user then chooses one of three options by swiping down the applicable icon.
